Happy Thanksgiving.......

Happy Thanksgiving all my fellow bloggers.  It's Thanksgiving and we all have so much to be thankful for.  My family is getting together here at my house, all the kids and the grandbabies. So much fun and so much to be thankful for.  We are anxiously awaiting the birth of our twin grandbabies that should be here some time in December.  No project to share with you, just a warm message to you that your Thanksgiving is a great one.  Be safe and happy....Until next time, Dianne and the Shabby Gals........

Song Lyrics Project

Hey guys:)  Hope you are well!  Time is just moving along and soon I will be able to meet my twin babies.....I can hardly believe it's almost here and I will be able to hold and snuggle them!  I have been sloooowly getting their room ready.....these last few weeks I have been lacking creative energy.  One of my good buddies saw a fun and meaningful project at one of her friend's houses and thought it would be fun to recreate it.  So, we got together after our boys got out of school one day and spent the afternoon crafting and chatting....doesn't get much better than that right?

So, here's the supplies we used.....mod podge, canvas, large print of your song lyrics, glitter, and some paint.

We enlarged our song lyrics to 11X14 at Staples and then mod podged them onto the canvas.  After the back dried...we mod podged the front and added some glitter.  I decided to antique mine a bit around the edges of the canvas with some black acrylic paint.  Here it is in finished form....

This song comes from my church's song book.....and one of the first songs I learned as a child.  "Jesus Loves Me"  is a classic and means so much to me and thought it would be a fitting song to adorn my children's wall:)

Have a great day!

Cookie Cutter Garland

It's that time of year again!! I just love it!! Christmas music starts playing and everyone seems to be in a pleasant mood everywhere you go. My Mom and I got into the spirit the other day and decided to try making some garland out of a few supplies and cookie cutters. The cookie cutters came from the flea market this Fall in Springfield. We were both looking for them but for different reasons. I wanted to find some for my preschool class to play with and she came up with this fabulous idea to make garland with them. I of course jumped on the band wagon and we found many different kinds. We found brass, red plastic and tin ones. They were all so cute and we couldn't pass any of them by.

Since we had so many cookie cutters we decided to create a few different stands of garland with some of the different supplies we accumulated between the two of us. We had the table stacked with different items such as vintage garland, twine, tulle, beads, glass pendants, bells, etc. Here are some of the pictures of the items that we had before we started. The supplies we had collected were enough to get our creative juices flowing!!

Here some of the bags of cookie cutters we had purchased. There were a lot more but these are just to show you the different kinds we had to work with.

Here are the four different chains we made. I LOVE how they turned out and wanted to keep some for myself, but then again I always do. Sometimes these things have to make it into our booth. :)

This one pictured below is made with the tin cookie cutters and we put them on one of the vintage red and white garland.

This one is made with the brass cookie cutters and strung with two different colored twine. Then we put glass pendants on it and tied tulle bows on it.

This one is with the red plastic ones and gold ribbon. I took closer up pictures because the beautiful vintage tree it was hanging on kind of hid it.

Last but not least this is another garland that held the silver tin cookie cutters. They were fun to make and a great excuse to get together.

The 1933 Chest of Drawers

Good Evening everyone.  It's Wednesday evening and it has been a busy day.  The family hunters have returned home and unloaded everything they had needed for hunting.  They didn't bring home any trophies but oh well there is next year and I really don't think they only go for hunting.  They seem to bring home a lot of stories and good laughs.  Well I got a little excited with my next project and I forgot to take a before picture, but the chest of drawers was really purchased in May of 1933.  When I had started cleaning the inside of the drawers someone had written on the bottom of the drawer that it had originally been purchased in 1933.  It had come from an estate sale and I was the lucky one that fell in love with it.  It is a beautiful chest with a lot of details but one couldn't really appreciate all the details.  It was just a scratched up brown finish and kinda of boring.  So I started lightly sanding the piece and than brushed on a coat of kilz paint to cover any oil marks or imperfections.  I decided to get a quart of medium flat gray paint and paint it all over the piece.  Here is the piece:

Isn't she gorgeous?  After I painted the whole piece with the gray paint I decided that I wanted to highlight all the details in the 1933 chest.  I painted in all the grooves with a dark gray paint and in some places I rubbed the dark gray in some of the grooves, both fingers and paint brush was used.
I also loved the hardware but the finish was a burnished brass.  It just didn't look right with the gray tones that was on the chest so I sprayed painted the handles and than painted the light gray on top and wiped off the excess which left the light grey only in the crevices of the handles.
Look at all the details.  Even the feet have wonderful detail.
I think with the paint choice one really can see the details.
The top of the 1933 chest of drawers even has a jewelry box.

Lift the lid and this is what you see.
More details.....This is where my finger came in handy and than I wiped off the excess with a wet rag.  When all the painting and handy work was done I buffed the chest up with Miss Mustard Seed's finishing wax.  I loved the soft sheen that came from the wax.
Here she is- my 1933 Chest of Drawers.  It is the first piece to go in my bedroom.  I have a wonderful headboard and foot-board for my bed which will be next. The bed set will be painted the same.
So what do you think?  Do you like it?  Until next time, Dianne.........

Red Trivets

Hello on this windy, windy Monday afternoon!!  We had a nasty storm roll in last night and in return left us with no power.....I really hate having no electricity!!!  We are hoping it will come back late this evening....otherwise we may have a rather cold night sleeping:)  As I was preparing my blog post, I happened to run across this picture and it makes me want to go back to summer...even just for a day:)  This was taken at my parent's camp, where we love to spend time.  My son and his cousins thoroughly enjoy this place as well:)  This picture just makes me smile.....ahh the easy days of summer!!

Anyways....I found a set of trivets at a garage sale this past Fall.  They were okay before...however, I thought maybe if I sprayed them red they might even be more appealing:)  Here they are before....

And here they are after....

Have a great day....:)

How About A Little Sparkle?

Good Wednesday evening everyone.  I had the day off and enjoyed it by doing some fun things and running around doing errands.  It was a cold and windy day here in Michigan and all the hunters have gone off hunting.  My hubby and my son left early this morning for the elusive big trophy(the big deer).  My other son could not get off of work and he was really disappointed.  I for one can't understand how it could be so fun when it is usually so cold outside, but oh well I am not a hunter!
Well on to my little project and this one is an easy and fun one.  I had this old galvanized pail just sitting around and I thought I would do something fun with it.  Here is the before picture:

Usually everyone has an old bucket or pail just sitting around but I thought that this little pail needed a little sparkle.  I drew an exaggerated heart on one side and took out my acrylic paints and choose a fun pink color.
When the paint had dried and adhered to the pail I took some Elmer's glue and painted that on just inside the pink heart.  I sprinkled on some gold glitter on top of the glue before it had dried.
When that had dried, I lightly sprayed the whole pail with some varnish.  Just lightly and especially on the heart to keep the sparkles on.

So how do you like my little sparkle pail?  It could be used for so many things, but I put some flowers in it.
Well until next time, Dianne.......

Oversized Ruler Growth Chart

Hey everyone!! Hope you are doing well:) Thanksgiving is around the corner and we are getting some cold weather around here in Michigan. I love Thanksgiving....it's like the kick-off for the Holiday season!! This time of year is my absolute favorite...which I've probably mentioned a time or two:)

I recently made an oversized growth chart. I've been meaning to try and create one for awhile! One of my friends was making one and gave me the inspiration to try and create on too at the same time! It's always more enjoyable to craft with friends:) I had a decent size flat board in the garage...so I primed and painted it gray. I then pulled out my trusty 'ole cricut machine and cut out my numbers for the ruler. I decided to use a sharpie marker to try the ruler lines. I think that worked better than using vinyl strips. I then used burnt umber acrylic paint to make it appear distressed around the edges of the ruler.

Here she is finished.....I have her in our "Shabby Gals" shop just waiting for the right customer to scoop her up:)

Have a great day!

Need a Vase?

T.G.I.F!!! It seems that this week has been a long one. Usually I don't feel like I say this but I think because of the weather it seemed to crawl along. I should probably prepare myself for a long winter though. This is just the beginning. I guess I am just saying that I am glad it's Friday!!

I found this old lamp base down at the flea market we went to this Fall and I didn't want to paint it because I just love the old rusty finish on it. Some might have watched me walking around with it in my cart and wonder why I would want such a piece. They might have also been wondering where the rest of the lamp was but for me that was the charm in the piece. The possibilities for it were endless!! I couldn't wait to take it home and brain storm.

The ending result after a few failed ideas ended up being a vase. I thought that it would look adorable amongst all my other junk...I mean treasures...that I have picked up along the way. It is such a versatile vase as well and can change with the seasons....of course the flowers I put in it are not Fall flowers but they go well in my living room. So there you have it an old oil lamp base transformed into a beautiful vase for flowers. Another thought would be to collect a bunch of these bases to decorate tables for a wedding or even just for a Thanksgiving table. The possibilities are endless!  I hope you all like it! Have a great weekend!!

This is the beautiful lamp base that I found...can't you just see the possibilities? :)
